Ainsley reached that stage where it seems almost possible to watch a child growing. She slept rather a lot. Her personal tastes began to mature and become more individual. Bob lamented the loss of his 'little girl' and knew that harder times and bigger changes were to come.
Ainsley turned thirteen. Officially a teenager. Formally a high school student. The Pancakes joked about bracing for hormones and havoc.
Eliza had another of those frank and private parenting conversations with her daughter. One about boys, since that was the cliché of reaching teendom. There was a certain amount of "No boys 'til you're thirty (not thirteen)" involved.
At her party, they played karaoke on the game console. Eliza naturally got most of the high scores.
When her parents sang "Happy Birthday" Ainsley sang along, changing the lyrics to "Happy Birthday to me." At the conclusion, she took a little bow, making Bob and Eliza laugh.
